Shenanigans with screen

Friday, January 30th, 2009

I just had a neat learning experience with screen.  My session became locked to me accidentally hitting Ctrl s instead of Ctrl a.  Thanks to this post, I now understand what happened and a few ways to fix and/or prevent.  The original is pretty concise so feel free to stop reading this and browse there; or just read on.

  • Ctrl s sends an XOFF which stops character flow.
  • Ctrl q sends an XON which starts character flow.

That is the short term fix, Ctrl q will right the ship.  For longer-term prevention, add this line to your ~/.bashrc:

  • stty ixoff -ixon

In short, thanks to Morgy for a great post.

CD Recycling

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

A box full of discs resides in my basement, but that is changing. Thanks to my file server and CD Recycling Center of America, I can back up the content archived on my CDs and DVDs then send said coasters in for recycling.  The best part is that this service is free with the only cost being shipping.

My plan is to have all discs archived and ready to ship by the end of February.  If you would like to throw your discs in with mine, please bring them to the March meeting (Friday, March 6th).  The rules established by the Center are pretty simple:

  1. Discs and packaging must be separate
    1. Discs in one box
    2. Cases, inserts, etc. in another box
  2. Full discs and partial discs must be separate
    1. Whole discs in one box
    2. Broken or shredded fragments in another box

I will be happy to cover the shipping as I already have a pretty big order going in, though donations are accepted.  The destruction of your data is your responsibility.  I don’t know these people so if you have some haunting bytes on your discs, be sure to securely render them unrecoverable first.  Personally there is a separate stack on my desk of discs that will be going through the shredder.  Post comments if you have questions or feedback.

Spaces? In MY SCP?!

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Here is how to deal with space(s) in a remote source file with SCP:

scp user@hostname:”‘/path/to/my file name/which has spaces’” /local/path

Double quote, apostrophe.  It’s more likely than you think.

Produce hax

Friday, January 16th, 2009

I really enjoyed eating my first pluot this summer, but my local Kroger stopped carrying them after that.  Today I almost got to eat another pluot, sorta.  All I had to do was leave a small granny smith apple in my lunch bag out in 3°F weather overnight.  The result is a soft skin and soft internal sweet juicy fruit.  Hope I don’t get permabanned from Kroger.

Debian on Android installer released

Friday, January 16th, 2009

For those of you interested in the potential for a mobile device extravaganza at the February meeting, an installer for Debian on Android is now available.  Read more at the AndroidFanatic forums.  I wish I could get one on CB Wireless :\

Thanks, FoxyProxy

Like many people, I tunnel my web-browsing traffic through SSH to my server and out to the internet from there.  When I recently installed FoxyProxy in Firefox, my HTTP requests didn’t seem to make it to the internet.  I sniffed locally and found that my DNS requests were going to the local DNS servers despite setting network.proxy.socks_remote_dns to true in Firefox.  It turns out that FoxyProxy has an option Use SOCKS proxy for DNS lookups in its Global Settings tab which appears to be independent of the Firefox config setting.  Enabling this option got my traffic flowing over the proper channel.  Thanks, FoxyProxy.
